Pseudophichthys was named by Roule (1915) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 503]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Congrinae by Steurbaut (1984); to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Congridae by Schwarzhans (1985), Schwarzhans (2007), Schwarzhans et al. (2017) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
