Bolcyrus was named by Blot (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Congridae by Weems (1999), Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
