Ariosoma was named by Swainson (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 503]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Congrinae by Steurbaut (1984); to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Congridae by Steurbaut (1979), Stringer (1998) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
