Taxonomy
Kurtus velifer was named by Volta (1796). It is the type species of Semiophorus.

It was recombined as Semiophorus velifer by Agassiz (1835), Agassiz (1839), Agassiz (1839), Agassiz (1842), Agassiz (1844) and White and Moy-Thomas (1941); it was recombined as Exellia velifer by Bannikov and Tyler (2004), Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
