Paratarpon was named by Bardack (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Paratarpon apogerontus.
It was assigned to Megalopiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Elopidae by Peng et al. (2001) and Hoganson et al. (2019).
