Taxonomy
Protelops was named by Laube (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 863]. It is not extant. Its type is Protelops geinitzii.

It was assigned to Elopidae by Woodward (1901); and to Elopiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
