Taxonomy
Saurodon was named by Hays (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 863]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Saurodontidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Saurocephalus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Chirocentridae by Woodward (1901); to Saurocephalidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981); to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Saurodontidae by Applegate (1970) and Cavin et al. (2013).
