Taxonomy
Pleuropholis was named by Egerton (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-u K Apti Sepkoski's reference number: 915,1066]. Its type is Pleuropholis crassicaudus. It is the type genus of Pleuropholidae.

It was assigned to Pholidophoridae by Woodward (1895) and Woodward (1919); to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pleuropholidae by Cantalice et al. (2019) and Brito and Vullo (2023).
