Mesolepis was named by Young (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1891); to Platysomidae by Gardiner (1969); and to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
