Taxonomy
Harpacodus was named by St. John and Worthen (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. It is not extant. Its type is Harpacodus occidentalis.

It was assigned to Janassidae by Jordan (1963); to Petalodontida by Zangerl (1981); to Chondrichthyes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Petalodontidae by Hay (1902) and Ginter et al. (2010).
