Poecilodus was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: teeth]. Its type is Poecilodus jonesii.
It was assigned to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cochliodontidae by Hay (1902), Eastman (1903), Jordan (1963), Goto and Okura (2004) and Nelson (2006).
