Plinthicus was named by Cope (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 884].

It was assigned to Myliobatidae by Cope (1869), Hay (1902), Leriche (1942) and Rapp (1946); to Rhinopteridae by Purdy et al. (2001); to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Rhinopterinae by Cicimurri and Knight (2009); to Mobulidae by Cappetta (1987) and Kent (2018); and to Mobulinae by Cicimurri et al. (2022).
