Hypolophodon was named by Cappetta (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 884,958].

It was assigned to Dasyatidae by Cappetta (1980), Cappetta (1987), Cvancara and Hoganson (1993) and Bogan and Gallina (2011); to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002), Cione et al. (2013) and Case et al. (2015); and to Myliobatoidei by Ebersole et al. (2019).
