Taxonomy
Gymnura was named by Van Hasselt (1823) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. Its type is Raja micura. It is the type genus of Gymnuridae.

It was assigned to Dasyatidae by Jordan (1963); to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gymnuridae by Cappetta (1984), Cappetta (1987), Werner (1989), Noubhani and Cappetta (1997), Cicimurri and Knight (2009) and Underwood and Schlogl (2013).
