Palaeohypotodus was named by Glükman (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 884,958].

It was assigned to Jaekelotodontidae by Glükman (1964) and Herman (1977); to Lamniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Odontaspididae by Cvancara and Hoganson (1993) and Cappetta and Nolf (2005).
