Taxonomy
Heptranchias was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R]. It is extant. Its type is Squalus cinereus.
It was assigned to Hexanchiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Heptranchidae by Carrillo-Briceño et al. (2016); and to Hexanchidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1907), Jordan and Gilbert (1919), Jordan and Hanibal (1923), Jordan (1963), Applegate and Uyeno (1968), Uyeno (1972), Welton (1974), Long (1992), Long et al. (1993), Carnevale (2007) and Legendre et al. (2020).
It was assigned to Hexanchiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Heptranchidae by Carrillo-Briceño et al.
