Taxonomy
Histiophorus eocaenicus was named by Woodward (1901). Its type specimen is BMNH 25744, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Xiphiorhynchus eocaenicus by Monsch (2004), Fierstine and Starnes (2005) and Fierstine (2006).
