Pikaia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 449]. Its type is Pikaia gracilens. It is the type genus of Pikaidae.

It was assigned to Pikaidae by Walcott (1911); to Cephalochordata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chordata by Bambach et al. (2007).
