Metalia was named by Gray (1855) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Spatangidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915) and Grant and Hertlein (1938); to Brissidae by Fischer (1966) and Kier (1984); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
