Chelichnus was named by Jardine (1850). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Testudo duncani. It is the type genus of Chelichnopodidae.
It was assigned to Testudinata by Jardine (1850); to Caseidae by Haubold (1971); to Pelycosauria by Haubold (1974); and to Chelichnopodidae by Lockley (2011).
