Taxonomy
Cyphosoma speciosum was named by Clark (1801). Its type specimen is ANSP 1468, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Coptosoma speciosum by Clark (1803) and Clark and Twitchell (1915); it was recombined as Pseudodiadema speciosum by Clark (1907); it was recombined as Microsoma speciosum by Cooke (1941); it was recombined as Gauthieria speciosa by Cooke (1959).
