Hemiaster posita was named by Hutton (1873) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Lectotype designated in text used as type specimen.]. Its type specimen is EC.685, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Cyclaster posita by Henderson (1975).
