Taxonomy
Falco plancus was named by Miller (1777). It is extant.

It was recombined as Polyborus plancus by Campbell (1976), Guthrie (1992) and Steadman et al. (2003); it was recombined as Caracara plancus by Emslie (1998) and Clements et al. (2017).
