Axestemys byssinus

Taxonomy
Axestus byssinus was named by Cope (1872). Its type specimen is USNM 4089, a partial skeleton (xiphiplastron, cervical vertebra, isolated ilium, several fragmentary appendicular elements), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Black's Fork, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Axestemys, Axestus.

It was recombined as Axestemys byssina by Hay (1908), Vitek (2012) and Danilov and Vitek (2013); it was recombined as Trionyx byssinus by Gaffney (1979); it was recombined as Rafetus (Axestemys) byssina by Chkhikvadze (2000); it was recombined as Axestemys byssinus by Hay (1899), Hay (1902), Hay (1930) and Vitek and Joyce (2015).
