Trematopora was named by Hall (1852). Its type is Trematopora tuberculosa. It is the type genus of Trematoporidae.

It was assigned to Trematoporidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953), Jiménez-Sánchez (2009) and Ernst et al. (2014).
