Akmonistion zangerli was named by Coates and Sequeira (2001). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Bearsden locality, which is in a Carboniferous marine shale in the Manse Burn Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Akmonistion.
