M. Murakami et al. 2012Assigned to Phocoenidae based on nasal protuber- ances, premaxillary eminences, fossae for inferior vestibules, and pterygoid hamuli separated by palatines. Differs from all pho- coenids by having wide and long ascending processes of premaxil- lae, dorsoventrally stout zygomatic process, both left and right as- cending processes of premaxillae attaching to each nasal, narrow fossae for inferior vestibules, and wide mesethmoid. Differs from all phocoenids except Pterophocaena by having very wide pre- maxillae at premaxillary sac fossae. Differs from all phocoenids except Miophocaena and Haborophocoena spp. by having anteri- orly diverging mesorostral groove at level of antorbital notch; and ascending process of right premaxillae much wider than its coun- terpart on the left. Differs from all phocoenids except Miopho- caena, Haborophocoena spp., and Septemtriocetus bosselaersi by having low premaxillary eminences. Differs from all phocoenids except Miophocaena, Haborophocoena spp., and Piscolithax ted- fordi by having strongly left-skewed skull. Differs from all pho- coenids except Haborophocoena toyoshimai and Piscolithax lon- girostris by having wide external nares. Differs from Piscolithax tedfordi, Lomacetus, Haborophocoena spp., and Miophocaena by having a wide rostrum at antorbital notch. Differs from all extinct phocoenids except Miophocaena and Haborophocoena toyoshi- mai in having anteromedial and posteromedial sulci that are not connected to the premaxillary foramina.
