Calopodus was named by John and Worthen (1875). Its type is Calopodus apicalis.

It was assigned to Petalodontidae by Hay (1902); to Janassidae by Jordan (1963); to Petalodontida by Zangerl (1981); and to Pristodontidae by Ginter et al. (2010).
