Taxonomy
Palaeoniscus exsculptus was named by Kurtze (1839). It is a compression fossil.

It was recombined as Acrolepis exsculptus by Münster (1842) and Woodward (1891); it was recombined as Reticulolepis exsculpta by Holzapfel and Malzahn (1984).
