Taxonomy
Cuniculus was named by Brisson (1762) [conserved in ICZN Opinion 1894; non Cuniculus Meyer 1790 and Cuniculus Wagler 1830]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Cuniculidae.

It was assigned to Cuniculidae by Ríos-Uzeda et al. (2004).
