Taxonomy
Xenohydrochoerus ballesterensis was named by Rusconi (1949). Its type specimen is n. 556, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Villa Ballester, which is in a Pliocene marine sandstone in Argentina.
It was recombined as Hydrochoerus ballesterensis by Mones and Ojasti (1986).
