Colymbus parvus was named by Schufeldt (1913).

It was recombined as Colymbus (Dytes) parvus by Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Podiceps parvus by Jehl (1967), Brodkorb and Phillips (1973) and Guthrie (2010).
