Cummingella was named by Reed (1942) [Cammingella: Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C l Sepkoski's reference number: 2 Cummingella: Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 624]. Its type is Phillipsia jonesi.

It was assigned to Proetidae by Jell (2002) and Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cummingellinae by Owens (2003) and Lerosey-Aubril (2012).
