Gobioidei was named by Agassiz (1835). It is extant.

It was reranked as the suborder Gobioidei by Fierstine et al. (2012) and Betancur et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Gobiiformes by Betancur et al. (2013); and to Perciformes by Fierstine et al. (2012), Bannikov (2014) and Lin et al. (2017).
