Westphaliasaurus was named by Schwermann and Sander (2011). Its type is Westphaliasaurus simonsensii.
It was assigned to Plesiosauridae by Schwermann and Sander (2011); to Microcleididae by Benson et al. (2012); and to Plesiosauroidea by Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
