Taxonomy
Clupeocephala was named by Patterson and Rosen (1977) [ranked as a cohort by Murray et al. 2005]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Elopocephala by Nolf and Dockery (1990); to Teleostei by Cavin (1999); to Teleostei by de Figueiredo and Gallo (2004) and Murray et al. (2005); and to Osteoglossocephalai by Betancur-R et al. (2013).
