Desmatochelyidae was named by Williston (1894). It is not extant. Its type is Desmatochelys.

It was reranked as the subfamily Desmatochelyinae by Weems (1988).

It was assigned to Cryptodira by Hay (1902); to Chelonioidae by Hay (1930); to Cryptodira by Kuhn (1946); to Dermochelyidae by Weems (1988); to Chelonioidea by Kuhn (1966) and Nicholls (1992); and to Chelonioidea by Nicholls and Meckert (2002).
