Eretmochelys was named by Fitzinger (1843). It is extant. Its type is Testudo imbricata.
It was assigned to Cheloniinae by Weems (1988); to Chelonidae by Dodd and Morgan (1992); to Cheloniidae by Cope (1875), Berry and Lynn (1936), Hirayama (1995) and Frank and Ramus (1996); and to Carettinae by van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017).
