Cymatholcus schucherti

Taxonomy
Hadrianus schucherti was named by Hay (1899). Its type specimen is USNM 4046, a partial shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Melvin, southeast of, which is in a Priabonian marginal marine mixed carbonate-siliciclastic in the Yazoo Formation of Alabama.

It was recombined as Cymatholcus schucherti by Auffenberg (1963) and Vlachos (2018).

Synonyms
  • Cymatholcus longus was named by Clark (1932). Its type specimen is CM 11891 (holotype), a partial skeleton (partial shell and associated limb elements), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hoot Owl Canyon, which is in a Duchesnean terrestrial sandstone in the Duchesne River Formation of Utah.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Cymatholcus schucherti by Vlachos (2018).

E. Vlachos 2018Cymatholcus schucherti can be diagnosed as a member of Pan-Testudinidae based on the characters listed for that clade above. Cymatholcus schucherti differs from other North American pan-testudinids in the restriction of the gulars to the epiplastra, shorter pectorals that medially have an almost parallel humero-pectoral and pectoro-abdominal sulci, and the presence of a deep, angular anal notch.
