Taxonomy
Tapirus haysii was named by Leidy (1860) [also said to be 1859].

It was synonymized subjectively with Tapirus copei by Slaughter (1966) and Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was considered a nomen dubium by Olson (1940) and Simpson (1945); it was considered a nomen dubium by Dalquest and Schultz (1992); it was recombined as Tapirus (Helicotapirus) haysii by Hulbert (2010).
