Avicula (Oxytoma) was named by Meek and Hayden (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 94]. It is not extant. Its type is Avicula muensteri.
It was Pteria (Oxytoma) by Russell and Landes (1937); it was reranked as Oxytoma by Cox (1961), Vokes (1980), Sepkoski (2002), Scholz et al. (2008), Bouchet et al. (2010), McRoberts (2011), Arp and Seppelt (2012) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
