Discussion

There is no defined holotype. The material described by Forsyth Major (1888) and housed in the Musée Géologique Cantonal de Lausanne can be considered as its syntypes.

Taxonomy
Orycteropus gaudryi was named by Forsyth Major (1888). Its type specimen is cranium and mandible (NHML-M. 5690) and cranium (NHMW-A.4760) (syntypes) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Fossil collection from Samos Island in the Geological Museum of Lausanne, which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in Greece.
