Cytherea ovata was named by Rogers and Rogers (1837). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pitaria (Pitaria) ovata by Palmer (1927) and Brann and Kent (1960); it was recombined as Meretrix ovata by Richards (1948); it was recombined as Pitar ovata by Vokes (1961); it was recombined as Pitar (Pitar) ovatus by Palmer and Brann (1965).
