Typopus was named by Hitchcock (1845). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Sauroidichnites abnormis.

It was assigned to Tridactylidaee by Hitchcock (1845); to Tetrapoda by Lull (1904); and to Amphibia by Kuhn (1958).
