Hoplichnus equus was named by Hitchcock (1858). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Horse Race Quarry, Gill, which is in a Hettangian/Sinemurian terrestrial sandstone/shale in the Portland Formation of Massachusetts.
