Scyllium was named by Cuvier (1817). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Scyliorhinus by Regan (1908).

It was assigned to Scyllidae by Woodward (1889) and Leriche (1926); and to Scylliorhinidae by Jordan (1963).
