Nyasasaurus was named by Charig (1967). Its type is Nyasasaurus cromptoni. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt et al. (2013).
It was assigned to Thecodontosauridae by Charig (1967); to Prosauropoda by Ginsburg (1986); and to Dinosauria by Nesbitt et al. (2013).
