Plesiopterys was named by O'Keefe (2004). Its type is Plesiopterys wildi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Seeleyosaurus by Grossmann (2007).

It was assigned to Plesiosauria by O'Keefe (2004); and to Plesiosauroidea by Benson et al. (2012) and Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
