Prolacertiformes was named by Camp (1945).

It was reranked as the infraorder Prolacertiformes by Seiffert (1975); it was reranked as the suborder Prolacertiformes by Chatterjee (1980); it was synonymized subjectively with Protorosauria by Chatterjee (1986); it was reranked as the unranked clade Prolacertiformes by Muscio (1997) and Senter (2004).

It was assigned to Lacertilia by Seiffert (1975); to Eosuchia by Chatterjee (1980); to Archosauromorpha by Benton (1985), Benton (1990) and Muscio (1997); and to Archosauromorpha by Senter (2004).
