Taxonomy
Elochelys perfecta was named by Nopsca (1931). Its type specimen is MHNM 1982-852, a shell (complete shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Fuveau Basin, which is in a Campanian fluvial-deltaic horizon in France. It is the type species of Elochelys.

Gaffney et al. 2006A species of Elochelys differing from E. perfecta in having a larger shell; nuchal plate wider than long with very short anterior margin and strongly expanded posterior part; first peripheral plate with very short posterior margin; suprapygal plate present; first marginal scute square-shaped, covering more than half length of nuchal plate; first vertebral scute wider anteriorly with lateral margin lying on lateral part of first peripheral; second and third vertebral scutes roughly as long as wide; anterior lobe of the plastron with nearly straight anterior margin; intergular very wide posteriorly; shorter intergulo-humeral sulcus and longer intergulo-pectoral sulcus (Laurent et al., 2002).
